I'm not sure if I've ever introduced myself, if I haven't I apologize. I'm Ashley, not vegan but looking towards it. I have no vegan friends in real life and only 3 vegetarian friends. I'm a terrible cook, I hate food prep and I'm looking for friends to offer encouragement, tips and inspiration when it comes to a vegan lifestyle.
My fiance and I are both ovo-lacto vegetarians and we've been so for almost 3 years now. At first I was proud of myself since I came from a very food oriented family where meat was 98% of what I consumed as a child but now I feel like I'm cheating myself and failing animals worse than I was before. Before I just wasn't educated on the matter but as I learn more I can't ignore the egg, honey and dairy industry.
I had been thinking it for a while and when my fiance told me today that we should take the next step towards veganism (specifically a vegan diet) I was very happy. We're new parents, we're moving into our first house, planning our wedding and getting school/work all juggled up in the air so even though it may sound like a simple step (cut out eggs and dairy) I'm having a hard time with the actual action of it.
I want to take it slow as to not get overwhelmed, which I think is acceptable if I want to succeed. I know there are many layers to a vegan lifestyle that go beyond dietary choices (as a crafter I now have to avoid silks and wools...and what else?!) and though they might be blaringly obvious to someone more informed I'm overwhelmed when I think of all the "hidden" animal products out there. I don't have a ton of time to sit around reading books or website as I'm chasing my kid around so anything simple to start would be a real help.
I'm open to any tips at all to kick start a vegan lifestyle! I may never be fully 100% vegan but like I said, I want to work towards it, in time as I learn.
I'd also love to hear your story on why you choose to live a vegan lifestyle, and how it's impacted you and your family.

| Birthday dinner |
[27 Dec 2009|10:26am] |
It's my sister's birthday today... but she died in May. Anyways, she was a wonderful vegan like all of you, and I want to make a FEAST in celebration of her.
I have about 5 hours.... I have a great recipe for vegan cakes, but I'm looking for a recipe for your favourite entree!
Please, please let me know.
Thank you all! :) I love vegans. :)
Edit: I made an incredible dinner, if I do say so myself. I made spinach curry over rice, with homemade garlic/cumin naan, and a spiced carrot cake! Thanks for the ideas - I'll be sure to try them. :)

I got a bread maker for Christmas, but all (most?) of the recipes that came with it call for "dry milk". Thoughts on how to sub this?

And a vegan New Year! Christmas dinner at my house will be a vegan meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a mushroom gravy with green beans from our garden. I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays.

I sure do love that stuff. Who else has tried it? There have probably been a million posts on here about it that I missed. If so, oops. I missed grilled cheese so much!

( Please help... )
My acne is absolutely out of control.
I'm thirty years old and have struggled with severe acne since my teens. But a year before I went vegan, my dermatologist and I finally found a combination of treatments that resulted in much, much better skin. I went on Aviane birth control pills, I took Doxycycline daily, and I used Tetronoin cream daily as well.
After I went vegan, I dumped all of those medications. The Aviane is totally not vegan as they contain animal hormones. The Doxycyline capsules have gelatin on them, and I don't know about the ingredients in the Tetronoin cream, but all three are FDA approved and therefore have been tested on animals countless times.
I can't remember where I'd read it. I think it was on here, but nobody tagged it, so I can't find the post. Someone suggested washing your face with salt to draw out the infection, then applying tea tree oil and lavender oil. I've been doing that, but I'm an absolute mess.
Does anybody have any other ideas of what might help? By the way, my skin is on the dry side. After being oily for years, I guess age caught up with me, and I'm drying out like a mummy.
Thanks in advance for any advice y'all might have.

I'm trying to make a coat for this winter, but I'm having trouble finding a vegan yarn that's really warm. The closest I've got is Blue Skies Cotton; does anyone have a suggestion?
Thank you!

| People who "turn" Veg ask for help then ignore me. |
[19 Dec 2009|02:23pm] |
I've been working at the same place for almost 2 years so everyone knows I'm a vegan. Recently a couple of female co-workers, one of them 3 weeks ago and the other just this week, each told me that they are going to become vegetarian/vegan...citing a movie or something that showed animals being slaughtered...and asked me about my diet. But, when I offer to share an excel spreadsheet with them and help them to figure out what vitamins, proteins, & other nutrients they will need and how to find out what foods satisfy those requirements they act very uninterested and don't even mention it afterwards.
It makes no sense to me...anyone care to enlighten me?
